When discussing the dynamics of victim and perpetrator, injustice often signals disorders in the family relationships of previous generations. In some cases, it may represent a form of “invisible loyalty” toward an ancestor who experienced similar situations, or a manifestation of unresolved family suffering. In Family Constellations, a person can be guided to explore and resolve their connection to these past events, freeing themselves from repetitive patterns that influence their life. It is not uncommon for individuals to choose partners who exhibit violent behavior. Physical or psychological violence in a relationship can stem from unresolved generational traumas, such as experiences of abuse or conflict present within the family system. When episodes of violence have occurred in previous generations, a kind of “unconscious memory” can develop, manifesting even in subsequent generations.

Hellinger observed that through Constellations, people can recognize and “see” these invisible dynamics, bringing to light hidden emotions and patterns that cause suffering, and then release them to restore balance. The inability to find justice or maintain relationships free from humiliation is another recurring theme in “victim and perpetrator” constellations. Often, those facing this difficulty are unconsciously tied to a painful event within the family system, such as an injustice suffered or caused, a difficult separation, a betrayal, or a fraud endured or inflicted. This type of blockage can result from familial loyalty, where the individual feels unconsciously bound to remain in suffering as a way of symbolically honoring someone in their family.

Through the process of Family Constellations, these hidden dynamics can be revealed, allowing individuals to acknowledge the deeper roots of their struggles. By recognizing and addressing these unconscious ties, people can break free from the cycle of victimhood or perpetration, restoring harmony and creating healthier, more balanced relationships. This approach offers a path to heal not only personal wounds but also the generational patterns that have been passed down, fostering a sense of liberation and empowerment for both the individual and their family system.
